Blackburn Institute

The Blackburn Institute is developing a network of leaders, the Blackburn Fellows, who have a clear understanding of the challenges that face the state of Alabama. The Institute provides the fellows opportunities to explore issues and identify strategic actions that will improve the quality of life for our state and nation.

Blackburn History

The Blackburn Institute is named in honor of Dr. John L. Blackburn. A nationally renowned leader in higher education, Dr. Blackburn served as dean of students at The University of Alabama and was instrumental in the University’s peaceful integration. In 1994, The University of Alabama’s Division of Student Affairs formed the Institute to foster Dr. Blackburn’s belief that people link strategic actions through the generations for progressive and ethical change.

    • Locate information on careers, including job vacancies, employer directories and profiles, salary statistics, and possible jobs for each major. The Resource Center also has information on graduate school, job-search strategies, effective leadership, and studying or working abroad.

Center for Service & Leadership

At The University of Alabama, the Center for Service and Leadership strives to enhance the student experience through active and diverse engagement opportunities in the community. These meaningful and experiential learning opportunities provide students the ability to enhance their leadership skills while becoming active, global citizens. The Center is built upon the foundation that service is transformational for both individuals and communities.

The vision is to cultivate a culture that produces committed and engaged citizens that understand their leadership potential in creating a better society. Our programming is based on four categories based on the active citizen’s model.

The components of the Center are: Awareness, Preparedness, Experience, and Commitment.

CSL Goals:

  1. Increase students’ understanding of local, national, and global social issues
  2. Increase students’ awareness of personal leadership and civic responsibility based in the Social Change Model
  3. Increase awareness of the CSL and its core functions and programs
  4. Increase students’ exposure to and awareness of diverse populations.
  5. Assist students in articulating their personal leadership and service philosophy and give opportunities for practical experience

Crossroads Community Center

The Crossroads Community Center is an initiative of the Division of Community Affairs. Crossroads provides leadership in cultural programming and intercultural education by:

  1. Building relationships across cultures through innovative programs and initiatives designed to prepare students for a global society.
  2. Serving as a resource for organizations on and off campus concerned with intercultural issues in the community.
  3. Providing leadership and coordination for volunteers and professionals involved in intercultural activities.
  4. Conducting research and engaging in creative activity designed to build capacity for a multicultural society.

Dean of Students

The office of the Dean of Students, within the Division of Student Affairs, maximizes each UA students learning experience through a supportive culture that fosters personal responsibility, cultivates a climate for individual growth, and encourages a commitment to excellence.

The office of the Dean of Students provides a wide range of services and programs that enhance student development, and promote a healthy and supportive environment for students, parents, faculty and staff. Services and programs include: Campus Ministries, Graduate Student Services, Greek Affairs, Judicial Affairs, New Student Programs, Parent Programs, Undergraduate Parent Support, and the Women’s Resource Center. The On-Call Dean program is also sponsored by the Dean of Students office provides support to students and their families in times of trauma or distress.

Fraternity & Sorority Life

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, a department within the Office of the Dean of Students, is dedicated to the growth and success of the Greek community and to the individual development of fraternity and sorority members. Specifically, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life advises and provides guidance to the fraternities and sororities associated with the four Greek Governing Councils: the Alabama Panhellenic Association (APA), the Alabama National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), the Alabama Interfraternity Council (IFC) and the Alabama United Greek Council (UGC).

Each council has a different focus, operational structure, history, recruitment or intake procedure, and key dates. Chapters range in size from 6 to 438 members. Each chapter offers members a variety of opportunities to hold leadership positions in the chapter and at the University, participate in volunteer and service activities on campus and in the community, become involved in campus life and achieve success academically, personally and professionally.

Safe Zone

The UA Safe Zone program provides a visible network of allies for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and asexual (LGBTQA+) individuals. Safe Zone Allies distribute information regarding sexuality, gender identity, campus and community resources, and methods for reporting harassment and/or discrimination. The purpose of the Safe Zone program is to foster a University climate where everyone is treated with dignity and where all LGBTQA+ identified individuals are free to thrive academically, professionally and personally.

Student Government Association

The Student Government Association (SGA) is the student voice in the academic, cultural and social affairs of the University. It depends heavily on energetic and interested representatives elected annually from the student body.

Office of Student Involvement

The Office of Student Involvement recognizes that UA students come from many different backgrounds and have interests and passions that are as unique and exciting as they are.  Our goal is to connect every student with the groups and activities that will best fit their goals and foster their interests.  Whether those interests and goals are intellectual, social, recreational, cultural, multicultural or spiritual in nature, there is a place and a community for you here at The University of Alabama!

The SOURCE

The SOURCE is a physical space for all registered student organizations on campus. The SOURCE is located on the third floor of the UA Student Center, across from the Forum. This open space provides printing, copying, computer use, meeting space with a flat screen TV for presentations, bulletin board supplies, event supplies, faxing, application pick up/drop off and much more!
